After Durres, Vlore is the second biggest port in Albania. It is located where the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea meet each other. Compared to other towns, there are not so much sights in the area however it is a starting point of Sarande. This is a famous coastal road where you can see miles and miles of beaches, groves and small villages.
Vlora is known to be a hero city where historic events took place in relation to independence and freedom. There is also a Museum of Independence that showcases the road of Albania in becoming an independent country in Europe. Vlora is considered an industrial center where you can find cement and plastic factory. There is also a cannery that produces items for export. The region of Vlora is said to be rich in various agricultural products like olives and grapes. It is also a producer of dairy products that are used by the region.
There are also nearby villages you should visit. You can also find the old castle of Kanine where you can see a panoramic view of Vlora and the sea. Vlora is also the home of Ismail Qemali University which is an institution for naval officers. There are a lot of courses that are being offered by the university from engineering to business administration. When visiting the place, it is best to learn a few Italian words that can increase your chances of successfully getting around. Almost everyone knows how to speak this language so you will not get into trouble.
The best accommodations are found along the coast. It is not hard to find a good hotel in the city. Some of them have access to the beach and good restaurants. Locals are very hospitable to travelers. Although you can pay using Euros or Dollars, it is best to have few LEK in your pocket which is ideal if you will be planning to grab a drink or bite. It is hard to find public transportation in Vlore but there are mini vans that you can hire which can help you in going around the city and nearby areas.
