Explore the beautiful temples of Delhi

The temples of Delhi are some of the attractions in any tourist visit to New Delhi, especially the Lotus Temple, Birla Temple and Akshardham Temple.

Birla Temple

Among the temples of Delhi stands the Birla Hindu temple, although its real name is Lakshmi Narayan Mandir.  This temple, built by the traders Marwari Birla and attended by Gandhi during its opening, is the temple for anyone because it is open to everyone, including the lowest caste and it doesn’t matter whether or not you are practitioners of Hinduism.

The central area is dedicated to Laksmi (the god of wealth), but includes altars dedicated to all the gods of the Hindu pantheon of Gods like Shiva, Ganesh, etc..
From the architectural point of view it is nice, as it is painted in cream and brown colors and the walls are decorated with sacred symbols and phrases. It also has white domes. Besides the main temple, there is an area dedicated to Buddha (Hindus believe that Buddha was the last incarnation of Vishnu). It is a place dedicated to meditation (in the space of the god Krishna) and is surrounded by gardens areas.

Lotus Temple of New Delhi

The Lotus Temple in New Delhi (also known as Bahai Temple) is the main temple of the Bahai religion and is spectacularly beautiful as its structure resembles a lotus flower, hence the name. Besides the beauty and grandeur of the building, it is surrounded by manicured gardens, which are nice to spend an afternoon there, enjoying this temple. The Bahai religion seeks to unite all religions so perhaps this makes sense in the way that the temple has no religious representations (no paintings or statues or anything).

It was designed by architect Fariborz Sahba Iran, who managed to shape it like a huge white lotus flower. Besides its beauty, Lotus Temple of New Delhi is very large and inside it, it is able to accommodate 2,500 people. It is surrounded by ponds, it has 9 gates and and it is over 40 meters high.

Akshardham Temple

The Akshardham Temple (or Akshardham temple complex) in New Delhi, which name means divine and eternal abode of the Supreme God is not a temple of all castes, or the temple that it looks for fellowship and unite all religions. It is a modern church, a spectacular architecture that was inaugurated in 2005 with contributions made over 10,000 faithful believers.

The Akshardham temple is built in pink stone and marble as these materials and colors are for the Hindu symbols of purity and eternal peace. It is a large temple, resembling more of a palace than a temple and it is surrounded by huge gardens exquisitely decorated with statues and fountains.
